Is anyone else seriously afraid of Palin becoming VP?

I think Matt Damon pretty much sums it up:

You do the actuary tables, you know, there’s a one out of three chance, if not more, that McCain doesn’t survive his first term, and it’ll be President Palin. … It’s just, it’s absurd.  It’s totally absurd, and I don’t understand why more people aren’t talking about how absurd it is. …  It’s a really terrifying possibility, the fact that we’ve gotten this far, and we’re that close to this being a reality is crazy.

(Kudos to View from North Britain for the video link.)

Seriously, this is both baffling and terrifying.  To be fair, I thought the fact that Bush was elected for a second term, no matter who his opponent, was also baffling, but this is on a whole new level.  The U.S. as a country and society has raised the bar on ridiculous, baffling, idiotic moves.  Yes, of course it’s the political party members who made this decision, but the fact that we have a society in which a political party supported by a very large percentage of our population is not only allowed to do this, but furthermore is praised for getting everyone excited about politics again.  Shit.

Though I guess all we can do is laugh off our collective stupidity, as per usual: SNL did a humorous skit with Palin (played by Tina Fey, of course) and Clinton, which was mainly humorous because of how idiotic Palin was — the very reason why her present position is actually ridiculous and terrifying.

The following is probably the only heartening news regarding Palin that I’ve heard since she graced the public eye with her presence: from “Alaska Women Reject Palin”:

Never, have I seen anything like it in my 17 and a half years living in Anchorage.  The organizers had someone walk the rally with a counter, and they clicked off well over 1400 people (not including the 90 counter-demonstrators).  This was the biggest political rally ever, in the history of the state.  I was absolutely stunned.  The second most amazing thing is how many people honked and gave the thumbs up as they drove by. …

Then, the infamous Eddie Burke showed up.  He tried to talk to the media, and was instantly surrounded by a group of 20 people who started shouting O-BA-MA so loud he couldn’t be heard.  Then passing cars started honking in a rhythmic pattern of 3, like the Obama chant, while the crowd cheered, hooted and waved their signs high.

So, if you’ve been doing the math…  Yes.  The Alaska Women Reject Palin rally was significantly bigger than Palin’s rally that got all the national media coverage! …

The citizens of Alaska, who know her best, have things to say.

Man. That blog entry about the rally was uplifting. Thanks for posting it.

I’m cautiously optimistic at the moment. Meaning that in any sane world, I think all this junk coming out about Palin’s past would end up with a landslide victory for the democrats in November, but thanks to the way the media operates it’s hard to get an actual read on how it’s really going.

Yeah, it made me a little happy to read it, though depressing that it got so little media coverage compared to the pro-Palin one.

Regarding a landslide Democrat win: unless the entire US media is completely missing the pulse of Americans’ opinions on this election (which would be SO wonderful), I would say that, while a Democrat win is totally a very good possibility, a landslide win isn’t.

Thanks for coming over to comment! Your my first commenter here! (No prize though, sorry!)

She seriously scares me. If they do win, I *am* pretty serious about potentially moving to Quebec.

Another friend told me he’d be moving to Germany. On the plus side, I’ll have so many exciting places to visit with all of my ex-pat friends!

Also, she reminds me why so many people from Idaho annoy me. She mainly annoys me, but the fact that she could be VP or President is definitely disturbing.

    Haha. Yeah, indeed.

By the way, I now have a “general life” blog over here on wordpress, and a photo blog as well.

This story needs to be on the cover of Newsweek. I am truly disgusted by how little coverage there’s been, but I am totally awed and inspired by the event. The people united can never be defeated!!! Especially important though is exposing her as NO CHAMPION OF WOMEN. I’m gonna forward this all over the place. By the way, I had to put my real name above ’cause I vote with it, but am now going by a chosen name more & more: Have kept my baptized middle name, taken my grandma’s last name and given myself the middle name I always wanted. So please think of me as Betsy Ruth MacBrayer!!! SISTERHOOD IS MORE POWERFUL THAN REPUBLICAN MONEY!!!!!

I’m glad you found the story inspiring. Just be sure to link to the original article when sharing about the firsthand account of the protest against Palin in Alaska, not this entry that only quotes the original. The original has photos, too!

My appreciation for Matt Damon went up after watching that video. I really need to know if she thinks dinosaurs were here 4,000 years ago. :)

For serious! Hey, here’s a fun fact: the town that Palin was mayor of had a LOVELY law: charge rape victims for the rape kit and forensic investigation! You know, because it’s probably their fault anyway, taxpayers shouldn’t have to pay for girls that put themselves out there.

She is just SO evil. You know, McCain’s not great at all, but Palin is like a Bush clone. With lipstick, of course.

Here’s the best fact: as you know, she graduated from University of Idaho. What you probably don’t know is that JAMM, her major department, is one of the easiest majors you can declare at this university. In fact, I was going to pick up a second degree in advertising in the same department because it was painless.

I love UI and all, but no one with a B.A. in journalism from this institution should be qualified to be VP.
